A Glimpse of Hiking Tomales Point

by Alex and Ashley - September 7, 2014 - 5 comments

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

A few weeks ago Alex and I were on a hiking kick and decided to head out to Tomales Bay to hike to the point.  Tomales Bay is located north of San Francisco and offers a ton of different hikes and activities, which is perfect for sharing for #WeekendWanderlust.  To reach Tomales Bay we drove these awesome country roads for about an hour and ended up on Highway 1, passing through the town of Point Reyes.

The exit we took off 101 was this little country road that took us to Tomales Bay

We have finally reached Tomales Bay! Hello Pacific Ocean!

Between Point Reyes and Tomales Bay you can hike, kayak, taste awesome cheese and of course get some oysters; we definitely need to head back since all we did was hike.  The hike was 4.8miles to the point and then of course you had to head back and is famous for the elk that hang out on the cliffs.

The beginning of the hike. As soon as you reach the ocean there is a little turn off where there is a farmhouse. This is where the hike begins

The hike started easy but then became a series of hills, up and down for 4 miles.

The views were totally worth it though.

We finally spotted the infamous elk!

Then we rounded the corner and there were so many elk just grazing about! It was really amazing to see.

It was a fun afternoon even though by mile 4 I was over it as the last .8 mile was through sand and scraggly bushes that scraped up my entire legs.  I would highly recommend wearing pants and tennis shoes, also bring a jacket and sunscreen as the weather can change rapidly on the coast.

Beautiful but EVIL flower. Prepare to be scratched on the last part of the hike; the trail is not as well maintained and these beautiful thorny plants grow everywhere!

Success! Alex is glad to have made it so he doesn't have to listen to my bitching anymore :)

Tomales Bay is a perfect afternoon away.  The hike is quite popular so it can be a little crowded but we were lucky and had it practically to ourselves, plus seeing the elk was awesome!  I would highly suggest coming out here for a weekend escape!

It’s been a very long time since I’ve done that hike and checked all those elk, what a gorgeous day it looks like – perfect!

It was gorgeous weather, we really lucked out! It only was too hot for the last 20minutes of the hike. Much better than the 90degrees we experienced when we hike Mt. St. Helena 🙂

I absolutely love hiking, it is one of my all time favorite physical things to do. This looks like such an epic hike, especially since there is scenery along the way. I’m originally from the PNW and most of our hikes are just straight trees until the very top where you finally get to a vista. Thanks for sharing, I need to add this one to my list of hikes!

I’ve been to San Francisco several times and never heard of Tomales Point. I’ll have to send my husband and son out next trip to hike the trails. Thanks for linking up to #WeekendWanderlust.
