The Most Beautiful Place I’ve Ever Been | La Sagrada Familia

We had been in Barcelona for almost a month by the time my sister arrived and we had yet to visit the inside of La Sagrada Familia. Before we went inside I was hesitant about spending the money to visit this over the top church. We had been to visit the outside of the church several times with other friends who had visited and I was somewhat over it. But I felt we would be remiss if we did not at least see the inside at least once. Well, let me tell you, if we had missed out on seeing this it would have been the biggest mistake of the trip.
You can’t really understand the beauty of the Sagrada Familia from pictures alone but hopefully through the photos I took there you too, will be inspired to travel to Barcelona and see it for yourself. The church has been under construction since 1882 and Antoni Gaudí became the chief architect in 1883. Gaudí dedicated the last years of his life to this church and it was less than a quarter complete when he died. The church is still under construction and should be complete by 2026. There are many reasons it has taken so long but the main reason is that it has been built completely through donations which is funded by the ticket price. But even if you visit Barcelona before 2026 (the tapas alone are tempting enough) it is still more than worth a visit.
I love that the stained glass windows at La Sagrada Familia are more than just colors; they are filled with sayings and names relating to the life of Jesus Christ. All of the patterns and colors in the stained glass help contribute to the overall light and peaceful feeling inside the church, even with the immense amount of tourists. Gaudí wanted to have an immense amount of light and color in the church to combat the sometimes oppressive feeling that Gothic churches can have.
So have we convinced you to visit La Sagrada Familia? Have you been before? What did you think of this over the top and totally unique church?
If you plan on visiting La Sagrada Familia my only suggestion is to purchase tickets ahead of time as they often sell out!
