November has been a difficult month for the world. We have had our world shaken and the illusion, that the west is safe, is broken.
The truth is the world is going through a difficult time right now and the illusion of safety is no longer as strong as it was. We can no longer say we are safe because “terror and terrorism is something that only happens in the Middle East”; that these problems and conflicts only affect those in that region. War, terror and extremism do not follow borders but instead leach out into the world, especially in this day and age where every little thing is obsessively shared and reshared on social media.
But at the end of this month we feel HOPEFUL after everything that has happened, because you can combat fear with love and understanding and the realization that the majority of people in this beautiful world are kind, loving, and good. This is the most important thing you can take away from travel.
As we have traveled this month we have crossed between Greece and Turkey and spoken to Orthodox Greeks, Muslims, Agnostics, and Atheists about the attacks on Paris, Beirut and Baghdad and we ALL agree that these were acts of terror perpetrated by a group of people whose main goal is to instill fear and xenophobia across the world in order to further their ultimate goals and agenda.
Not only that, ALL of us have agreed that the world is ultimately good; that there are more good people out there than evil and that we can not live our lives in fear because that would let them win.
The U.S. State Department released a global wide travel warning recently in response to the attacks, stating that Americans should avoid crowded places and public places but this is giving into the fear and letting them win. Telling people to avoid public places ALL OVER THE WORLD is ridiculous. It may sound harsh but honestly, think about it. I understand that there is risk and the world isn’t as safe as we hoped but you can’t stop living your life out of fear. Fear will eat away at us and cause us to make rash statements and decisions that go against the unity this world so desperately needs.
So instead of fearing the world why don’t you try to get to know it? Why not talk to someone from a different culture, any culture, and get to know them. If you are afraid to leave your home at least reach out through the Internet. Talk and LISTEN to people from different walks of life, different opinions, different faiths, different political leanings. You can learn so much from other people but I guarantee the most important thing you will learn is that people are good.
Good people may not make the headlines but I assure you there are more good people out there than evil and it won’t be hard to find them.
So that is what we plan to do in December and for the rest of our lives. We are going to keep traveling (as safe as possible) and meeting people to expand our worldview and understanding. We hope that you do the same.
Here is what we (and you) have to look forward to in December:
We have left Marmaris, Turkey and are now in Athens. I am so unbelievably excited for this because I finally get to nerd out over Ancient Greek ruins!!! It has been too long! In two days I will be dragging Alex to the Acropolis, Agora and the Athens National Archaeology Museum and perhaps more if I can 🙂 We will also be getting our fill of Greek food because who knows when we will have it next!
After that we will be heading to ROME! This will be our first time back to Rome since we moved and we cannot wait. We already have a restaurant list that is two pages long and we only have four days… Besides the food we also cannot wait to connect with all of our friends that still live there! It is going to be a busy but lovely five days.
We are then heading to a new country, Portugal, to meet with my family to celebrate the holidays. They are flying all the way out from California to spend two weeks in Portugal with us and I am so excited for this! Christmas is the most important holiday for my family and I have never spent a holiday away from them so it will be fantastic to have two weeks with them right before Christmas. We may not be able to be together on the actual holiday but at least we will have Portugal!
For Christmas and New Years we have booked our first housesit! In LONDON! We cannot wait to experience the holidays in London and look forward to our first housesitting experience and having a place to call our own over the holidays.
So that is what we are getting up to in December. I hope you will join us in exploring this beautiful world filled with amazing people and that you do not let prejudice and fear overtake your world view.
As Mark Twain allegedly said (you can’t believe everything on the internet…)
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
